In memory of Claus Egge, friend and valued member of the storage industry family

August 1, 2012

By Rose Ross, @Rose_at_O

Last week, Claus Egge, analyst, blogger, friend, colleague and established player of the storage world, passed away suddenly.

I, like so many of those in the storage world, have known Claus for many years. He was one of the first analysts many storage professionals would have briefed or set up briefings with during his IDC days, before the dot-com bubble burst and before the shadow of 9/11 was cast over us. He was – and continued to be – on all European storage PR professionals’ top tier list.  He certainly was for me.

I will remember him as a great person to work with, a sharp analytical mind, knowledgeable and supportive—especially during my early years in storage PR in the early noughties. But I think I will most fondly remember him from the social side of the storage world at more informal gatherings such as #storagebeers and CloudCamps.

Claus loved the debates at those events. I remember a debate I had with him not long ago around big data, or should I say, according to his definition, “savage data.” Claus believed big data should be called savage data because it was wild and untamed—a fascinating perspective. I want to, and will, remember Claus as always being armed with a grin and a great sense of humour, and very much enjoying the social side of the storage family.

He’ll certainly be missed as we head into the busy storage autumn with events such as IP EXPO, SNW Europe and VMworld Europe all within the next three months. We’ll all be busy during those events, but they won’t be quite the same without him. 😦

A small regret is that despite many chats around doing an interview for the blog here, the time was never quite right for him. I am sure an interview would have revealed more about this quiet man and his love of music and other interests.

If you want to share your memories of Claus, please email the Rainmakers on rememberingclaus@rainmakerfiles.com

His business partners and great friends Puni Rajah and Martin Hingley will announce an appropriate celebration of Claus’s life in London in a few weeks time. Please keep an eye out on the Rainmakers site for more info on that.

At the celebration, which may coincide with the next #storagebeers in London, I will be raising a glass with many of his friends and saying “Skol” in a toast to my dear, departed storage mate, Claus.

Farewell!
