Following our article on Desiré’s key event advice and tips (“5 golden PR rules for events”), we chat top tech events, PR pitches and hot topics in tech for 2014…

Q.  Tell us a bit about yourself.

Originally from Mauritius, been in this country for the last 10 years or so. English is my third language and my degree is in sociology. So to land in this country and to work as an editor on one of the biggest B2B websites in the UK is an absolute treat. Prior to working on TechRadar Pro, I was the editor of ITProPortal for 8 years and have been covering and writing tech for my entire adult life.

Q. Tell us a little bit about the title you write for and its interest in data storage/mobile/cloud/infosec/virtualization.

TechRadar Pro is a fairly new title, we’ve been around for less than two years. However, because it has been carved out of TechRadar, UK’s biggest technology website, we already have a significant amount of uniques, far more than more established websites. I seldom write unless I attend an event, have an exclusive or snatch an important interview. As for our areas of interest, our roots lie in computing but my team and I have been working hard on diversifying the content production to include business technology at large. 5 golden PR rules for events…

 ipexpo-exhibitionnewsIn the midst of a busy events period, the O-team have had some tips from Désiré Athow(@desireathow), Editor of TechRadar Pro, and are armed with a trusty event PR checklist at the ready!

 

Here are 5 handy hints for PRs looking to make the most of event opportunities with the press…

 1.      Timing is key in the run up to events – Do not wait for the last week to invite journalists to briefings- pitch as early as possible to bag a slot in their diary! With an initial conversation in advance, you’ll also have the time to get a sense of what they’d like to discuss, and can prepare accordingly if a briefing is arranged.

2.      Communicating with the press – Each journalist is different in the way they like to be pitched. For instance, we can definitely understand Désiré’s aversion to out of the blue PR calls pitching interviews with unknown companies. However, there are now so many ways of communicating, that over time, you can gage different journalists’ preferences for contact. Read the rest of this entry ?

It’s a delightful story of spin and double standards in the media world…

Journalists often say it annoys them when press releases refer to a company as “leading” or “the leader”—unless, of course, the company actually is the market leader in its industry. You can’t blame them. I imagine it gets tiresome wading through hundreds of press releases from hundreds of companies all boasting they are the “leaders” of their industries, even if that is just plain not true. New Twitter PR tool: Lissted launched by RealWire to curate the media on Twitter

The Countdown team loves to explore new social media tools, so we were excited today by the news that RealWire, the UK online press release distribution company, has launched Lissted, a new web application based on RealWire’s growing database of over 10,000 journalists, media professionals and outlets on Twitter.

You can use Lissted to find journalists and media outlets (free), listen to relevant conversations going back 30 days (paid), and monitor media mentions of topics, brands and people that are important to you, including email alerts when you aren’t logged on (paid).

Lissted is a Twitter-based tool, so you do need to be on Twitter to use it, as users are required to sign in through their Twitter accounts.

Interview with Howard Marks, Founder and Chief Scientist @DeepStorageNet

Howard Marks can be found online at DeepStorage.net, on Twitter @DeepStorageNet or follow his blog at NetworkComputing.com. Based on the US East Coast, Howard will be in London next month to keynote a virtualization seminar at the Hilton Metropole on June 28th. He recently delivered the seminar in Montreal and will also keynote the seminar in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 7th.

Q.  Tell us a bit about yourself: 

My first job out of college, where I studied chemistry, was at Lifeboat Associates which was then the world’s largest software distributor. Of course it was 1980 so we were still a small business best known as being able to put CP/M software on any of a hundred disk formats.  From there I started the first Novell reseller in New York and ended up as a consultant for 25 years working across servers, storage and networking.

To promote myself as a consultant I started writing at PC Magazine in 1987 and have written hundreds of articles and product reviews.

 Q. Tell us a little bit about DeepStorage.net and its interest in data storage. 

As the publishers all closed their test labs I realized that users and vendors both still needed the independent hands-on validation reviews provided. So I took the test lab I built for magazine reviews and turned it to validating products with the vendors, rather than publishers, paying the bill.  Since I spent the last 7 years or so as the resident storage guy at Network Computing we’re mostly concentrating on storage and related technologies.

Basically we take equipment into the lab and tell the world how it really performed. I also spend a lot of my time explaining storage technologies and how to use them in papers, seminars and webinars.

Q. What’s hot in storage this year?

New UK channel publication launches. Will Channelbiz be the biz for the Storage Channel?

Today sees the launch of Channelbiz.co.uk, a pure play daily online channel magazine that is set to break the mould, from NetMediaEurope – the leading online IT publishing house.

According to NetMediaEurope’s announcement. Channelbiz is a channel title with a difference, because in addition to covering breaking news, the site aims to demonstrate to distributors and resellers the benefits in using emerging and nascent technologies to cut costs and to add those extra points to the bottom line.

Call all Storage gurus: #SNWEurope Call For Papers now open

Calling all storage experts as the ‘call for papers’ for the SNW Europe, Datacenter Technologies and Virtualization World conferences is now open. The event billed as part of the “Powering the Cloud” experience takes place this year on 30th and 31st October in Frankfurt, Germany. As the event stradles Halloween, I wonder if we’ll have any scary storage storytelling? Perhaps darkened rooms, upward pointing torchlight of the presenter’s faces? Well you’ll have to just wait and see if you’re brave enough 🙂 – We will, of course, be doing trick or treating to the stands during the expo. The official line from this year’s website is as follows:

They are looking for quality submissions from IT end-users, consultants, industry analysts and system integrators/VARs, describing case studies or technology update sessions that focus on real-world deployments and/or methods and best practices to evaluate new, existing or future solutions.

Submissions from IT vendors may also be considered but it is vital that these sessions be delivered in a vendor-neutral/product-agnostic manner. To encourage contemporary content, they request that all proposals discuss fresh deployments.  Submissions will be ranked and selected by the Conference Committee based on suitability and adherence to these submission guidelines.

Would you like to be a Gestalt IT Field Day Delegate? The good news is that our delegate selection process is open and flexible – no one is excluded from potentially being part of our events. The bad news is that we can’t take everyone who would like to go. Read on to learn how you can be part of Tech Field Day in the future!

Delegate Qualification

Our selection process is based on a simple idea: We want to bring together just the right group of people for every event regardless of where they come from! Qualification is based on who you are and what you do, and no one is excluded.

We are looking for the following key characteristics in our Field Day delegates:

  1. Independence – This is a state of mind, but employment status comes into play as well. Are you open-minded and willing and able to consider and recommend products and technologies based on their own merits? Independent critical thinking and discussion is a crucial part of the Field Day experience!
  2. Contribution – Are you a selfless contributor to the advancement and sharing of knowledge? Field Day Delegates devote hours every day writing, advising, and supporting the technology community. Attending Field Day events gives them knowledge and connections they can use and share.
  3. Knowledge – Field Day Delegates open up the hood and explore technology, discovering how and why things work. The are authoritative experts and the Field Day events are a chance to dive deep, applying what they know and learning more.
  4. Fit – Each Field Day event is like a dinner party: The selected Delegates must be able to come together as a group, with everyone adding to the discussion. Some of our events are focused on a certain area of technology, while others celebrate the diversity that gives Gestalt IT its name.

It is never easy selecting delegates for a Field Day event. We narrow our list based on the criteria above, sorting and weighing each individual to pick just the right group. The ideal event includes many first-timers along with a few repeat delegates to help the group to gel. Selection isn’t automatic, even for past delegates, and space is always limited.

How to Get Selected

It’s easy to get selected: Excel in independence, contribution, and knowledge and fit in with the event! But this isn’t something you can try to accomplish. Instead, it’s something you do naturally. The best Field Day Delegates are selected because they naturally do all of these things every day!

Although there is no secret recipe for being selected, here are a few tips to help you along.

  1. Become active in your field – Start a blog, support users in a forum, join a user group, or write tutorials – the possibilities are endless!
  2. Claim your name – It’s difficult to get to know someone who keeps their identity hidden. Make sure you have “about” pages, boxes, and profiles including your name and employer.
  3. Be yourself – Have some personality and show the world why they would want to get to know you better. Be yourself, not who others want you to be.
  4. Be visible – Get a Twitter account, register on LinkedIn and Facebook, and set up a Google profile. It’s a connected world, so make yourself easy to find.
  5. Tell us – Fill out the form below, and get to know the current set of Field Day Delegates. Let us know you’re interested and share what you’re doing.
