Interview with Desiré Athow (@desireathow), Editor of TechRadar Pro (@TechRadarPro)

March 19, 2014

By Rosalind Carr (@Rosalind_at_O) and Rose Ross (@Rose_at_O)

desire-athow

Following our article on Desiré’s key event advice and tips (“5 golden PR rules for events”), we chat top tech events, PR pitches and hot topics in tech for 2014…

Q.  Tell us a bit about yourself.

Originally from Mauritius, been in this country for the last 10 years or so. English is my third language and my degree is in sociology. So to land in this country and to work as an editor on one of the biggest B2B websites in the UK is an absolute treat. Prior to working on TechRadar Pro, I was the editor of ITProPortal for 8 years and have been covering and writing tech for my entire adult life.

Q. Tell us a little bit about the title you write for and its interest in data storage/mobile/cloud/infosec/virtualization.

TechRadar Pro is a fairly new title, we’ve been around for less than two years. However, because it has been carved out of TechRadar, UK’s biggest technology website, we already have a significant amount of uniques, far more than more established websites. I seldom write unless I attend an event, have an exclusive or snatch an important interview. As for our areas of interest, our roots lie in computing but my team and I have been working hard on diversifying the content production to include business technology at large. Rose Ross talks to Hans De Leenheer, independent Blogger and vEXPERT

August 29, 2013

Hans de Leenheer, Independent blogger

By Rose Ross, @Rose_at_O, and Rosalind Carr, @Rosalind_at_O

This summer Rose caught up with Belgium based independent Blogger Hans De Leenheer @hansdeleenheer, chatting storage, virtualization, American Football and Storage Beers… Check out his latest insights at  http://hansdeleenheer.blogspot.co.uk/

Q. Tell us a bit about yourself:

As I was previously a systems engineer, I suppose initially I fell into blogging by putting solutions to problems encountered into a blog to help tackle these problems. In the last three years, I have put my focus more towards storage, compiling the how to’s and offering my insights into different areas of storage and virtualization.

As I started blogging more about new products and industry moves I gained interest from the vendor community. I got invites from DELL, HP and others to come to their events as an influencer. The best thing I do is being passionate about technology and sharing that passion with others, whether that is through writing, presenting or just speaking to people in person. And that is what I do today; I represent vendors when they need someone passionate to explain their technology. Read the rest of this entry ?

As we mentioned on the Countdown2StorageExpo blog back in February (here), the dates of VMworld Europe and IP EXPO no longer clash—great news for anyone with a foot in both the VMworld and IP EXPO camps. As always, we will be covering both events on this website and our sister blogs (see the blogroll on the right-hand side of the page).

Interview with Howard Marks, Founder and Chief Scientist @DeepStorageNet

May 11, 2012

By @Rose_at_O & @Olivia_at_O

Howard Marks can be found online at DeepStorage.net, on Twitter @DeepStorageNet or follow his blog at NetworkComputing.com. Based on the US East Coast, Howard will be in London next month to keynote a virtualization seminar at the Hilton Metropole on June 28th. He recently delivered the seminar in Montreal and will also keynote the seminar in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 7th.

Q.  Tell us a bit about yourself:

My first job out of college, where I studied chemistry, was at Lifeboat Associates which was then the world’s largest software distributor. Of course it was 1980 so we were still a small business best known as being able to put CP/M software on any of a hundred disk formats.  From there I started the first Novell reseller in New York and ended up as a consultant for 25 years working across servers, storage and networking.

To promote myself as a consultant I started writing at PC Magazine in 1987 and have written hundreds of articles and product reviews.

 Q. Tell us a little bit about DeepStorage.net and its interest in data storage.

As the publishers all closed their test labs I realized that users and vendors both still needed the independent hands-on validation reviews provided. So I took the test lab I built for magazine reviews and turned it to validating products with the vendors, rather than publishers, paying the bill.  Since I spent the last 7 years or so as the resident storage guy at Network Computing we’re mostly concentrating on storage and related technologies.

Basically we take equipment into the lab and tell the world how it really performed. I also spend a lot of my time explaining storage technologies and how to use them in papers, seminars and webinars.

Q. What’s hot in storage this year?

I’m excited about the continuing impact flash is having on storage design. I’m paying particularly close attention to the next generation storage arrays from vendors like Read the rest of this entry ?

Call all Storage gurus: #SNWEurope Call For Papers now open

February 22, 2012

By Rose Ross, AKA Rose_at_O

Calling all storage experts as the ‘call for papers’ for the SNW Europe, Datacenter Technologies and Virtualization World conferences is now open. The event billed as part of the “Powering the Cloud” experience takes place this year on 30th and 31st October in Frankfurt, Germany. As the event stradles Halloween, I wonder if we’ll have any scary storage storytelling? Perhaps darkened rooms, upward pointing torchlight of the presenter’s faces? Well you’ll have to just wait and see if you’re brave enough 🙂 – We will, of course, be doing trick or treating to the stands during the expo. So you’ve been warned exhibitors, have your candy ready or you know the consequences!!!

Deadline for submissions is 27th April 2012

Click here to submit papers online

We interviewed one of the organizers Paul Trowbridge about his top tips for success in securing a speaker slot here.

The official line from this year’s website is as follows:

They are looking for quality submissions from IT end-users, consultants, industry analysts and system integrators/VARs, describing case studies or technology update sessions that focus on real-world deployments and/or methods and best practices to evaluate new, existing or future solutions.

Submissions from IT vendors may also be considered but it is vital that these sessions be delivered in a vendor-neutral/product-agnostic manner. To encourage contemporary content, they request that all proposals discuss fresh deployments.  Submissions will be ranked and selected by the Conference Committee based on suitability and adherence to these submission guidelines.

Sponsoring vendors please note:  Speaking slot entitlements that are included in your sponsorship package should NOT be submitted via this process.

2 days left to nominate for the Storage, Cloud & Virtualization Awards (SVC Awards)

September 26, 2011

By Olivia Shannon, @olivia_at_o

There are two days left to nominate your company or project for the SVC Awards, now in their first year. The SVC Awards are organised by Angel Business Communications, the publishers of online and print titles SNS, Cloud Computing 365 and Virtualization World 365. The awards recognise the achievements of end-users, channel partners and vendors operating in the storage, virtualization, and cloud computing fields.

The awards are presented based solely on the votes of the readership of SNS, Cloud Computing 365 and Virtualization World 365, so the Countdown2StorageExpo team would advise anyone entering the contest to build a campaign around it to encourage your partners and customers to vote for you.

The good news is that your £50 entry fee (plus 20% VAT, where applicable) will be donated to Mimi’s Mission and Make-a-Wish Foundation.
